Just a thought but my husband and I just had a debate on whether or not we absolutley had to have mail delivered 6 days every week? could we live with just having mail delivered maybe 2-3 days a week? Maybe Mondays and Thursdays or Monday, Wednesdays, Fridays?
What are your thoughts?

Yeah, uh, I guess.

But wouldn't the mail carriers just have twice as much work to do on M,T, Th?

I'm sure there are additional job duties they could be doing on their non-delivery days...

I guess it would be fine for most residential delivery being every other day, but I'm sure many businesses would have a big problem with anything other than daily.

every other day for regular mail would be fine... there is a thing called fedex/ups if you really need to get something somewhere, and they do a MUCH better job than the USPS, also plenty of couriers and fax/email.

I really wish they wouldn't cut back....

just 5 years ago it was splashed all over the media at how lavish retirement parties and all were thrown for USPS and they had a budget surplus.

And now they are down....hmmmm....wonder how much it costs to design a new postage stamp? Let's just have the flag or something. That would save millions!

But if they have to cut a day it should be Saturday.

well i can kind of understand a lavish retirement party for someone who spent their life working for a place, but how lavish is lavish?
i'm not saying they should cut back but my hubby thinks they should move to a schedule similar to trash pick up days. an interesting theory but i think he was thinking that ya...there'd be more mail to deliver on those days but would spend less in fuel.

As far as I'm concerned mail twice a week is fine. 10% of my mail is necessarry, the 90% is junk. Online billing and banking along with e-mail and other computer commnication has reduced the need for snail mail except for junk (one of my pet peeves). Other than Christmas I may receive one or two personal letters a year and only three bills a month.
It would reduce the post office budget for delivery, vehicle mileage and maybe a salary or two. Hate to see anybody loose their job, but maybe that could be done through attrition.

I don't see why its necessary. I go check my PO Box about 2 or 3 times a week. That seems like enough. Unless I'm expecting a package or magazines most of its just junk mail anyways. All my bills have been switched over to paperless.
