I shop between Trader Joe's, Whole Foods for my staples and a few ethnic stores(italian/chinese/indian/mexican) for things like bulk rice/daal/shrimp paste/chilis/etc.. I don't think any of the major chains are that great, as somebody who cooks everything from scratch and a lot of ethnic food (i.e. only shopping the outer aisles), the quality and variety particularly in produce/meat/seafood depts is just not there in the big chains. Good for stuff like batteries, toilet paper, windex, soap, detergent though.
I started a Moderator cut: link food blog the other day, and one of my first posts is about Wegmans Coffee. It's very fresh, very good, and better than most other "mass-produced" stuff on the shelves.
Only downside is Wegmans doesn't offer online shopping.
I highly recommend the affordable Wegmans brand regular and specialty coffees!
Start brewing!

I don't think any supermarket can beat Uncle Guiseppe's on Long Island. It's a high-end italian food supermarket.
I have been there, it's okay, kind of just an overpriced standard grocery store with some Italian stuff thrown in and a very nice bakery. Wegmans is outstanding and definitely IS the best supermarket in the country.

In general they do have what other supermarkets have and overprice them, but the poultry and italian food are to die for.

I have got some good stuff at the one in Smithtown, but for example there is a better bakery right in the same shopping center (can't recall the name but go!), and I think you can just go to a regular small Italian grocery store or deli and get similar quality stuff for a little less.

Alpine bakery I lived in Smithtown for a lot of my life so of course I know of it. It's the best bakery I've ever been to. Amazing rainbow cookies
I really like Hannaford grocery stores, but they can be fairly spendy.
