I've lived in the west, the midwest, the south, and the east, and Wegmans is certainly the best grocery I've encountered so far. Whole Foods is not far behind, though.
As others have mentioned, I'm surprised Wegmans hasn't gone beyond the mid-Atlantic. It seems to me that with all of the NY, NJ, and PA retirees in Florida, Wegmans would do quite well in the Sunshine State.
When I went to school upstate in Cortland, tons of my friends always went to Wegmans, which was about 20 miles away. I never went, wish I could have. They love it, I don't know why though. I know they always used to say their cookies were good
They are good. So are their subs and other prepared foods from their cafe within most of the stores.
When I'm visiting my sister in Santa Monica I'll sometimes go to Fresh Choices, which is, I think, affiliated with Whole Foods. It's just that particular smell of organic produce, high-quality deli meats and cheeses, whole grains and herbs--you know that smell, right? Sort of a savory perfume.
Then I drive over to Von's supermarket to do the shopping.
