I' m guessing I' m not the first one saying this?
Never mind that statement about the Pacific NW. I was just venting. Forgive me?

No problem, no hard feelings, if you don't have any. Nothing wrong with having pride in the places you love. I was originally just making a playful jab at all the people on here who constantly turn everything into North versus South (and sometimes, maybe, versus California). Nothing personal. I mean, I realize why many of them do, but still... It just all looks really silly from this particular "outsider's" perspective.

I've pondered this myself, having lived in the South for a few years growing up. I think many Southerners consider "the South" as the states who formed the Confederacy, and "the North" as "the Union", i.e. the USA. All states admitted to "the Union" after the Civil War are by default, "the North". Just my take.
