I was thinking of this a few weeks ago while navigating one of the large roundabouts in my town. Personally I love roundabouts!! less fuel consumption and less time sitting in traffic. In my area roundabouts work so well that US 31 from 96th street all the way up Indiana 38?( I could be wrong about that) that is being upgraded up to Interstate-Highway Standards and instead of having conventional exits with stoplights. There will be one Large roundabout to facilitate the movement of traffic. They are also doing the same with Indiana 431 to. I can't wait! They work so well up here.
I think they are just lovely...as long as people know when to yield vs. when to take the right of way. There is one in Midtown Atlanta that I go through (or around, or about) quite often, and people have always seems to understand the rules.
They are efficient little inventions aren't they? I would like to see more of them in my my area.
They actually reduce the number of accidents because you have to slow down and cooperate with other drivers. You can't just fly through them like a regular intersection.
I've driven through some in Romania and Ukraine though that were total free-for-alls though.

I always figured with the amount of traffic in Atlanta that a roundabout would be a death trap.

Those big ones though, like 3-4 lane roundabouts can be disorienting at first.
yes they can be at first. Once you have went through the big ones a few times from each approach they arent as daunting.

Roundabouts are Rotaries. Rotaries is a term used in New England to replace roundabout.
They are nice and efficient for the most part, but they can get annoying. Sometimes they're overdone. Some of the streets I drove down in Spain had them at every intersection and you get car sick after going through several in a short time. Other than that, they're great.

At least to the best of my knowledge, roundabouts and rotaries are different. Where I am from (SE Massachusetts), a rotary is larger than a roundabout. Rotaries can have grass or plants on the actual land that forms the rotary island in the middle. Rotaries are usually, although not necessarily, multiple lanes.
A roundabout is smaller than a rotary, single lane, and usually has a cement circle in the center (no plants or landscaping).
