This reminds me a bit of meetings about development projects: Somebody gets up to speak (usually opposing the project) and says "I've lived here 17 years ..." I sit there thinking so if I only lived here 3 years, that means I don't have a right to speak? What route you're on is a lot more important than where you're from.
If people believe they are hip just because they live in a city it doesn't automatically make them hip. It just automatically makes them city dwellwers. What is hip anyway? It's just another trendy buzz word like "trendy" or "cool" or "Justin Bieber."
If you live in an urban area you are an urbanite. If you live in a suburb you are a suburbanite. It doesn't matter how long you live in a place or what you drive. I have met just as many idiots from the city as I have the suburbs. Some drove SUVs in the city and some drove Priuses in the suburbs. It really didn't make much difference.
Self-described "urbanite" is almost synonymous with "hipster." There are a few differences though. Urbanite encompasses an entire range of cultures but usually the only people who self describe themselves as urbanites are hipsters, which is the most ironic fad in history in my opinion.

A prius is about as un-hip as you can get today. The hip thing to do is ride a bike, preferably one that is fixed-gear, or take public transportation. You lose hip points if you own a car, period.

Absolutely! If you live in Portland. Should you not own a Prius, your car should be a Suburu for your beach, ski trips and camping trips.
