I hate to sound snotty, but hey its the internet.
How many of you adults here ,who consider yourselves hip because you live in a city, where actually born and raised in a city? Because in my opinion, any SUV driving suburbanite could move to the city and consider themselves an "urbanite."

Thoughts?

I'm one of the few. I lived in the city until I was a little kid, moved just outside the city, then 2 years ago I moved back.

Ever since I moved back to the city, I NEVER find anyone my age who is from here. They're mostly from the upper Midwest or overseas. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. I can't wait to move back to Long Island, because all of them are from the city.

People can't help where they're born. IMO, if you move to the city as soon as you have a choice of where to live, you're a true urbanite.

I think a true urbanite is someone who was born and raised in a city.

What if they moved to a rural area as soon as they had the chance? Home is not always where you grew up, as people have no choice but to grow up where their parents live.

Good point. I know people who were born and raised in NYC, and hated it-and has since moved out of the NY area. Where as, I know people who are from other states and even overseas, and they love living in NYC. Home is where you feel the most comfortable, imo.

I don't think anyone born in a city would call himself an urbanite. Self-proclaimed urbanites tend to be white middle-class kids born in the suburbs who buy into some sort of hipster cult. They're a bit scary.
