I've driven in both Houston and Dallas and would hardly call the drivers there aggressive.
Outside of the Northeast, I've experienced some aggressiveness in Miami and Los Angeles, but never Texas (of course, it's a big state and I've only driven in two cities there).
if you're at a red light and wanting to make a left, you make the left right before the light turns green (and before oncoming traffic starts moving). I'll only do this move in the city, at home, I'll wait for the light to turn green, and for all the oncoming traffic to pass.
as far as "aggressive" drivers - you *must* be aggressive to drive in *manhattan* (not the other boroughs) or else you'll get eaten alive. outside of manhattan, i've found the most aggressive drivers, as a whole, to be people in massachusetts. I found the "best" drivers to be in Germany, on the autobahn (even going 120 mph, they actually follow *rules*).
