The saddest thing about this video is that these people interviewed have bachelor degrees. Some thought that Arkansas, Idaho, Montana, and Tenneseee are Midwestern states

Every american should be able to at least name and locate all 50 states.
I could do that along with the capitols, at an early age.
I think poor knowledge of geography is pretty universal among Americans. I bet few people outside the Northeast could correctly label all the states in New England.
Hell, geographic ignorance might be universal. I was in China just before the Iraq War started. Many people thought Iraq bordered the U.S.

It's not like geography is hard. The real challenge is getting kids to stay awake for their social studies class.
Hell, I could label all 10 Canadian provinces (and three territories). IMHO that should be common knowledge, even for Americans.
This is not unique to coastal states. I am originally from the Midwest, and knew tons of people there (I mean LOTS) who could not name very many states on a map outside of the ones immediately surrounding the one we lived in. They knew almost nothing geographically outside of our current state and those immediately surrounding it. So that is really no different than someone on the west or east coast not knowing states outside of his/her region.
These are the minority, boneheads are boneheads whether they live in California or New York or Illinois or Colorado. I notice less of that "lack of knowledge" here on the west coast than I did back home. People here in general seem more open to the outside world and more educated than they did back there- but of course as with everywhere, you will find some idiots.
EDIT- and as someone else mentioned, this kind of ignorance is NOT unique to Americans. TV shows often like to make it look like it is, but it is not. I know people in other countries such as China and Thailand, and have visited both places- plenty of people in those countries also cannot find many other countries on a map outside of the very well known ones such as their own and maybe the US.
