I don't think anywhere in CA he'll find a house for less than 250,000.

Yeah I just don't get the appeal of that place though, besides the great RE deals right now. My brother owns a house in Henderson...I don't mind visiting occasionally but it's hotter than hell there most of the year, and there isnt *that* much to do beyond the strip, which is fine if you're a tourist but gets old fast when you live there (according to him)

River Ranch is a planned Community in Lafayette, Louisiana. It is designed like older areas. It has a town square and numerous stores and restaurants, even banks. It is a fairly low maitenance development, as well. The houses are reasonably sized and closer together so it really feels like a community. There are apartments, condominiums, townhouses, and regular houses.

Temecula and Murrieta are nice areas of Southern California with homes for under $250k.

actually right now you can get a nice house in CA for $250,000 or under.
For example: Visalia, Merced, Victorville (southern cali), Escondido (20 miles north from San diego), Bakersfield, Hesperia These few are quiet affordable

Here in uk for small old and ugly house in a small town i would have to pay at least $200,000-$250,000. While in USA i can buy a great new home in better location... thats why i love them

Off the top of my head, I may be wrong, but Texas has one of the best housing markets at the moment. North of Dallas is a great area, it is growing fast. From Plano to Frisco to McKinney would be a great place to look. I recently bought my house in Sherman (north of McKinney) for $175,000. It was built in 1997 and is 2400 square feet. I'm very happy with it.

Also, the same area of Texas has a fairly good job market.

I just couldn't live amongst all that dead stuff out west. Where's the greenery? That would be soooo dreary and boring to look at all the time.
