I do, too. I started to dream of living in The South when I was in my early 20s. I always felt like I didn't belong up there.

I was born and raised in Indiana...and I LOVED IT! I just moved to knoxville 7 months ago...and so far- I am dreading it. People here are not necessarily any more friendly than those in my northest indiana community.

Well, Choley30, welcome to Knoxville, even though I don't live there anymore, I think my home people would welcome you. The only reason I could think of someone not being friendly, was if the same attitude that was exhibited to us in Indiana about southerners was being exhibited by you - but, surely you wouldn't do that. So, for any unfriendliness on the part of anyone, I apologizeand again, welcome.

This is more about the south and north than Knoxville so it is being moved to the General US forum.

He then said in a most condescending and badly executed southern accent, "ya know, thar's more to skool the-un readin', writin' 'n 'rithmitic." Then he chuckled all bemused with himself. I could see the blood rise on my mother's complexion as she began, "I see. Let me tell you a little bit about my family. My brother is an orthopedic surgeon and a concert violinist. My father was an engineer at K-25 and Y-12 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, you know, where they developed the atomic bomb. He's also an ordained Baptist Pastor. My husband attended Georgetown University and Carson Newman College, graduating in 3 years Koom (had to spell phonetically) Laude and went on to get his Master's Degree while supporting a wife and 2 children after being a pilot in the Army Air Corps in WWII and the Air Force during the Korean conflict. I am a published writer as is my father. Now, would you like to tell me a little bit about your family? I'm quite sure my Southern children will have no trouble keeping up in your Yankee school. Can we move on and get them to their classes or do you want to spend more time insulting and belittling them?" The guy was left with a befuddled look on his face trying to find words to respond. I just looked at the principal with a satisfied the-South-just-rose-again smile. (Go mama, go mama, go mama.)

That's just one example of the kind of stuff we put up with as Southerner's living up North for 3 fah-ree-zing years, and I don't just mean the weather, before Daddy found a new job, on purpose, back South in South Carolina. Thank you God!

I was just wondering, is it still like that if you move from the South to the North or have they wised up and dropped their stereotypes of us?

Have any of you moved North and then back South of your own volition and why?
You sound just as snotty as that principal did! Im glad your arrogance now resides back in the South. Youll fit right in!

We just looked at eachother trying not to rudely giggle at her midwestern speech. My sister whispered, "I think she wants us to get in the kerr, er, I mean car." Also Fort Wayne was pronounced Furt Ween by the Furt Weenian's. And if they said Knoxville, it was pronounce Knaxveel. As Southernern's we say Knox-vul. Just like Louis-vul in Kentucky and Green-vul in South Carolina and Ash-vul in North Carolina.
What a crock of crap. Noone up here in the North pronounces Knoxville as "Knaxveel". Where do you come up with this stuff?

Youre just a Yankee hater who never lived in the North, its readily apparent you never did to begin with. Take a hike, dawlin'.

Rubbish.

Who would want to admit they lived in TN?

I did for awhile, and the first chance I got I escaped back to Chicagoland... where civilization and society exists. Not to mention everything else that TN completely, utterly, and unforgiveably lacks.

Shame on you.

Cute. You guys down there in Tennessee are awfully quick to talk sh|t about Indiana, when your own state isn't exactly paradise, either. Do you do this for all northern states, or is this just an inferority complex?

And ceeglass--you're attempting to gauge the attitudes of Northerners based on an incident that happened half a century ago? Seriously, come on. You claim that we made fun of your accents and whatnot, but then you turn around and make fun of ours?

I think a better question would be "Do Southerners self perpetuate stereotypes and misconceptions about themselves?".

Whats more pathetic is that ceeglass was pulling the whole accent thing right out of her arse. Sorry, noone talks like that in the Midwest, and everyone knows that. I dont know whats more pathetic, the fact that ceeglass made that crap up, or the fact that people actually believed her.
