I say "Godspeed" to those who will be away for a while. I'm Christian, but I don't think I've ever said "God bless" to anyone besides "God bless you" after somebody sneezed.

Not even at church? Every church I've been to that has been the kind of standrad greeting. Maybe it's an evangelical thing

Heard it all the time when we lived in Georgia just 45 minutes south of Atlanta. And every sentence had "Praise the Lord" in it somewhere or "god's will". I'm so glad I'm away from that. it really offends me now. I just cringe when I talk to somebody on the phone in GA and they say that to me.

Why is it offensive?

Maybe s/he's atheist or agnostic?

Granted I don't think I'd care if someone said "May Vishnu and Brahmin watch over you" but I do believe in a God so maybe I'm okay with someone believing in one more god than I. Zero to one or one to zero is a bigger leap, percentagewise.

I've heard this said as a greeting among the World War II generation in North and South Carolina.

As far as younger people go, baby boomers, gen x, gen y, it is said in church settings, among Christians sometimes as well.

Actually in my hometown in Columbus, GA hadn't heard God bless as a closing. Now I have heard "Have a blessed day." A few old fashioned black folks will say "Blessed and highly favored" in response to "How are you?" majority of folks don't usually say that though.

Yeah exactly. We're both from Columbus. Neat. Anywho I think "God bless" is a little more older. Although I've been told that I talk like an old man because I still carry around a few saying from my grandmother even though she passed away when I was 12.
