I am interested in hearing about your opinions on moving to the southwest.

I am currently in DC metro area, and I want out. I want an extreme change, so moving to the "desert" sounds like a good idea. Don't bother with "it's so hot" or the like. I've been to dry and humid climates. I know. Save it.

So what is it really like? Anything for a little patch in the "woods"? I'm a country dude. I'm coming down to SoCal in a month, extending the trip to cover the southwest after I'm done visiting CA. What areas should I check out. Is there any unique outdoor activities over there? Are rural areas any different than up here? Etc.

TIA.

Barbed wire and cowdung, not decrepit barns and deer track.

Baking, not steaming.

Rocks, not trees.

Chile, not crabs.
