I love Newport, R.I. If I could spend summer anywhere that would be the spot. No matter how hot it gets there is usually a cool breeze blowing off the ocean. The downtown is full of great shopping, museums, resturants etc. The harbor is great for boating. There are a couple of beachs, not the best (water's too cold) but if you can afford Newport you can afford a pool (with a wind break). The outskirts of downtown (it's actually an island) are close to the ocean and filled with big beautiful summer houses set on rolling hills that get the ocean breeze and the sound of the waves crashing on the rocky shoreline.
Chalk another one up for Newport, Rhode Island. Tons of fun (better bar scene than cities 5x its size), beautiful cobbled streets and wharves downtown combined with great beaches, stellar views, and the incredible architecture make it heaven on earth from June-September.
Nothing like walking along the beach in the evening, or taking a nice swim during the day if it gets hot.
Is that Lake Michigan? I have some good memories there. The sand dunes, and attempting to swim in 50 degree water in July . Good times.
