News, U.S. 'Murder Capital' a Tricky Figure. (apartment complex, how much)

New Orleans will probably "win" again for 2009. The city already has 147 murders, and it's only the beginning of October. That's actually more than London, England had last year. Which is kind of insane, when you remember that London has 7.56 million people, and New Orleans has around 350,000.

I always thought New York City was the "murder capital" in terms of shear numbers and New Orleans was the "murder capital" in terms or a murder rate.

I don't keep up with this stuff though, I live in a rough neighborhood and I try to keep the killings out of my head, it's too terrible to think about.

I think I read once that a town in one of the Sioux reservations was really the "murder capital", in the 1990s anyway, but that it was unlisted as too small.

Put it like this that Murder Capital stuff is played out in 2009..if your city never had murder rate above 70 per 100k or 80 per 100k like D.C and New Orleans maybe detroit than your not a murder capital...your just bragging about homicides in this day and age nothing to brag about brag about the opposite....most of these ppl claiming murder capital their city hasnt had to go through rates above the 40's so look up the history of what homicide rates those 3 cities had to endure

I agree that the "Murder Capital" is played out but to say a city wasn't dangerous because their rates as a whole wasn't above 40 per 100,000 isn't true, there's no way you can't say cities like New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, etc. weren't dangerous, neighborhoods/sections of these cities have had very high murder rates well above 40 per 100,000. My neighborhood (as of 2008) has a murder rate of 43 per 100,000 (population of 35,000 with 15 homicides) which is 7 times higher than NYC as a whole which is 6 per 100,000, it was way higher before.

Also keep in mind that if you are Black or Hispanic the murder rate is far higher than what it is for the whole population.

Miami is not that bad in homicides now. but certain neighborhoods still are very high, for example its overtown neighborhood averages about 10 homicides a year and it only has 9k people so it has a rate of 112per100k. but during the 80's the city of Miami averaged about 50-70per 100k till 1991. 1981 was its worst year when it had 242 for a pop of 3.2k so it was at 75per/k

112 per 100,000??? Damn that's crazy, that's similar to NYC neighborhoods that peaked slightly above 100 per 100,000 and that was terrible, I checked the crime stats and if the population was the same as it is now my neighborhood peaked at 105 per 100,000 in 1990 (35,000 people with 37 murders). Overtown sounds like a warzone.

Gary might not have 100,000 people anymore. I know it's been dwindling for decades from its high near 1960. Were that many people murdered or did they just move out? I know that my parents got out in 1960 when they got married.
