Thanks so much for all the info! Any more suggestions? We'd like to have a few more options to narrow down. My mom can also drive up to an hour to go to work if need be. She does that now.
How about the Sacramento area? Overall, I'm not much of a California fan myself, but Northern California is quite beautiful. Sacramento in particular is not crazy expensive or crowded like the Bay area, has nice moderate year-round weather (there are 90 degree days in summer, but dry and not scorching), it hasn't been hit as hard with the recession (probably because it's the state capitol) and is not far from Idaho. Another city to consider besides Sacramento is the college town of Davis. It's just outside of Sacramento and ranked as one of the friendliest towns in the US, also as one of the top 25 to "live well" in.
That's the sticking point. Jobs are hard to come by right now. Unless you're in a high-demand field like Nursing, I wouldn't recommend moving anywhere without a job lined up.
