Homicides down in some large US cities :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Nation (http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/1360620,w-homicides-big-cities-down-2008-010309.article - broken link)
NYC as a whole had 523. An increase from last years 496.
Quote:
But murders rose about 5 percent, to an unofficial total of 523 last year compared with 496 in 2007. There also were more victims of shootings - 1,781 through Dec. 28 compared with 1,708 in 2007 - and more shootings, 1,499 through Dec. 28 compared with 1,432 the previous year.
At the same time, gun arrests were down 12.9 percent, to 3,079 last year from 3,537 in 2007. And drug arrests in 2008 declined 7.5 percent, to 64,352 from 69,628 in 2007.
I believe Portland, Oregon finished the year with 24 murders for a population of 580,000, resulting in a rate of 4.14 per 100,000. Quite good by American standards, but not good by the standards of cities in other developed countries.
