are there bright colored, gritty rows like this anywhere in america? anywhere near new england perhaps? all i see in boston are the stone and brick rows
San Francico has those colors but the homes are not as boxy. New England has rowhouses, but the region is more subdued and visually conservative in its housing, so you may not see the colors there. Maybe Miami area?
Several towns/cities I can think of having similar row houses, perhaps not in abundance, but fairly well represented: Baltimore, Md.; Albany, NY; Pittsburgh, PA's War District.

I have relatives in Pottstown, PA near Reading & they live in a house like those pictured. Most are red brick, but the occasional, brightly painted yellow house is stuck in the middle of a block. I've seen oddly colored stone/brick stand alone homes in the surrounding areas, as well. Although not common, the one's I've seen seem to have a store/business/bar/restaurant on the ground floor & living quarters (2 floors) above... VV
I've seen row homes like these in some of the grittier parts of New Jersey, Philly, & it's burb's. One pic was marked Canada but I would've sworn it was Conshohocken, PA.
A lot of these clapboard houses in the Boston area. I've seen them in East Boston, the denser parts of Cambridge, Somerville, Charlestown, and South Boston to name a few. The brownstone and brick rowhouses are pretty much limited to Back Bay and the South End, I think.
Reading, PA and Philadelphia, PA are both cities known for their row houses. They don't look exactly like the pictures you've provided, but they are probably some of the closest that you will find in the U.S. Here are pictures from both areas:
