Hi Everyone,

We're looking to find a new home. And I've searched the web for what seems like eons trying to find it. Finally, decided to ask for your input.

We're a conservative, Jesus loving, middle aged couple (white) with 2 beautiful daughters that we adopted from Guatemala. That in itself may or may not make a difference:-)

Our wish list includes:

Low crime
Small town (less than 10,000 people)
Low cost of living,
4 seasons
Clean air, water
Home with about 5 acres for chickens, garden, etc.
Laid back friendly people

OK, I know I'm asking for the moon, but I can at least dream, right

Got any suggestions for us?

Thanks,
Sandra

Hmmm taking a stab here. I'm only familiar with the eastern part of the country...perhaps Ohio or small towns in IN, KY, or TN? Maybe others can give specific towns in those areas...
I've researched homes in KY and the value and acreage for the money was outstanding. How much budget for a home?

Paris! Or Versailles. Population just under 10k according to city-data and some of the most breathtaking horse farms in the world. Residents could probably point you in a better direction...I just love KY.

Small town, Small cost of living? Stay in-between the Appalachians and the Rockies.

One important question is how will you make money? Small towns of this size are not noted for having many employment opportunities.

On jobs I think it varies and isn't always that bad. People have moved to my little town to teach, work at the old folks home, buy the bar, or do craftsman type work. If you're wanting high-skill or high-wage work it's not very good, but the person seems open to even raising chickens (if I understood them right) so might do okay. (There are little towns with literally nothing, but the person seems willing to go as high as 9,900 people.)

On the outskirts of Knoxville, TN. Heck, even in Knox County you can find five acres of land and raise chickens. At least you'd have some employment opportunities. If not, there are some surrounding towns here that would fit the bill such as Seymour and Clinton.

And you get four seasons, but four glorious seasons. Winter is mild, whereas in KY it can get really cold and they certainly have more snow. We just get a dusting a couple of times a year, on average.

And you stay out of the path of tornadoes, usually.

I've been in Knoxville for four years and I've watched KY have some really bad weather.

Many towns in Upstate NY would fit the bill, actually. I'd try something in maybe Delaware, Otsego, Allegany and Wyoming Counties. You might like towns like: Walton, Otego, Delhi, Warsaw, Perry, Bolivar and many others.
