People are moving out. That's why the unemployment is low. If the economy is average with a population that is either not growing or losing population, it's reasonable to expect a lower unemployment rate than in states which are growing rapidly or who have recently grown prior to this down economy.
The new book "Hollowing Out the Middle" looks to be an interesting read. I plan on buying it soon.
I think these "stats" should be taken with a grain of salt. First, not everyone uses professional movers, and second, this is just one moving company, Mayflower. Also, people are generally not moving as much in this economy.

Waiting for the predictable response mentioning illegal immigration in 5, 4, 3, 2….
no, not the smart ones-its the angry ones. And even the people leaving are overwhelmingly leaving SoCal. NorCal doesnt see many people leave.
Most of us arent going anywhere and leaving the state isnt even a topic of discussion-but it appears to be a huge topic in every other state, this notion of Californians moving there.

The middle and lower classes are getting squeezed. Manufacturing and higher end clerical jobs have moved out of state (or overseas). High tech is flailing and / or fleeing. Biotech requires specialized skills and is a "clubby" industry that does not like to hire "outside" people. Green tech is a fad that will never replace the lost jobs. The peak has passed. The only reason absolute population loss has not set in is immigration both legal and illegal - however, it appears that immigration has also peaked and furthermore, net outflow of previous immigrants recently began to exceed inflow of new ones.
