A 25-block area near downtown on the south bank of the San Antonio River. In the late 1800's the King William District was the most elegant residential area in the city. Prominent German merchants originally settled the area. It was zoned as the state's first historic district, and has once again become a fashionable neighborhood.

The Monte Vista National Historic District is located one and a half miles north of downtown San Antonio and is home to approximately 3,000 people. Its distinguished residential architecture, primarily from San Antonio's "Gilded Age," defined as extending from 1890 to 1930, forms the most extensive and intact neighborhood of this era in Texas Monte Vista Historical Association - San Antonio, Texas

The Fan and the Museum District (bordering neighborhoods) in Richmond are gorgeous, like some others have stated. Here's some pics of mine from this area:
My personal favorite. I think it's absolutely gorgeous...
Monument Ave. And in the Fall, Richmond becomes so beautiful with all the colors changing, leaves on the ground, etc.
I'd also recommend checking out the Ghent and Freemason districts in Norfolk. Here's some from Freemason:
Please forgive the cones/construction...
I don't have any pictures of Ghent, but if you care to do a little searching on Flickr or something, you can find tons of pictures.
Lastly, I'd recommend one of the many neighborhoods in San Francisco for historic, residential beauty. Plus, imo, it doesn't get better than SF weather. Nob Hill is an amazing neighborhood, as are Alamo Square, Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, Noe Valley, Castro, and Telegraph Hill. Actually, most neighborhoods in SF are amazing in one way or another, but for beautiful historic homes, I don't think it gets better than those I mentioned.
Beautiful homes...if we forgive the cones/construction, do we need to forgive the mermaid on the fence as well?
Haha, Norfolk and its mermaids. Yeah, I suppose you should forgive them too. Norfolk uses them to signify landmarks and important places around the city.

Just play'n...they're cute.
