We are fortunate enough to be retiring in our early 50's in 2011.

Question: What is the most beautiful historic residential neigborhood in the U.S.?
We are only interested in 2 criteria:
1) a high concentration of beautiful, historic homes;
2) decent weather for most of the year.

(Assume emloyment , housing costs, and all other factors irrelevant.) Feel free to post any photos if you have them.
Thanks in advance.

Savannah, Georgia
Charleston, South Carolina
Boston, Massachutses

I personally like the Between the Rivers Victorian district of Rome, Georgia, but I could be biased.

Lots of places but one that I really liked was the Garden District of New Orleans, amazing homes there. Weather though might bother some people.

Inman Park, Atlanta - developed in 1880 as a streetcar suburb, the neighborhood was connected to Downtown by one of the nation's first streetcar systems running along Edgewood Avenue.

Yorktown, Virginia or even Williamsburgh, Virginia. People are even living in the Colonial Restoration area of Williamsburgh. Last time I was in Yorktown, we had lunch in a cute little restaurant built in 1720. Not too far from the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area either. Lots of things to do, including Busch Gardens.

Another area with a high concentration of historic homes is the Stockade and Rondouts districts of Kingston, New York. The Rondout also has decent growing art scene. Also, Kingston (and nearby New Paltz) has a GREAT location in the Hudson Valley, right outside the Catskills and pretty close to NYC. However, winters are considerably colder and much snowier than the Colonial triangle of Virginia.

Deacon, Inman Park was the first one I thought of. I never really ventured into the area until I decided to take a different route to Little 5. I was amazed! My car was basically going .5 miles per hour because I wanted to take everything in. It was charming, quaint, and full of splendor at the same time. Those homes are gorgeous!
