US 287, from Montana to Texas. (OK, I admit I had to look this one up...I actually knew the Wallace, ID question ) My initial non-lookup guess was 395 from CA to the Canadian border, but that is wrong.

Here's one:

Some Interstates have changed numbers over the years. One, in particular, I-84 between Portland, OR and Salt Lake City, UT was known as Interstate what prior to 1981?

OK folks, for the answer to the original question on US Highways.

First the states are Texas and New Mexico. But primarily Texas

Two: The highways are US 81,US82, US 83 US84 and US 85.

Three the crossings or sharing are as follows:

US81 and US 82, cross at Ringgold, TX
US82 and US 83 cross at Guthrie, TX
US83 and US 84 share the Winters Freeway on the west side of Abilene,TX
US 84 and US 85 (Extremely hard to find) share a short route around Santa FE, NM. US 84 and US 85 are sharing I-25's route but US 85 unmarked on most maps on its route thru New Mexico. I had to pull out a 1997 Rand to mark it for sure

On a side note, the even pair US82 and US84 also cross in Lubbock TX US 82 heads west then southwest as the new Marsha Sharp Freeway, and US 84 heads northwest to Littlefield, on its way to New Mexico.

Default Mouse of the South New Question for 10/6

OK, to my knowledge this question is only one of its kind.

Name the only still functioning ferry to connect two segments of US Highway.

Answer will be posted 10/9....good luck all and thanks for helping this string grow.

The longest would have to be US 287 at 1791 miles.

Would this have been one of the suffixed routes that were eliminated, perhaps I-80N?? The only two suffixed routes retained are I-35E and I-35W, occuring twice once in Texas, and once in Minnesota. Ironically, the I-35E segment in Texas is the most congested of the two, and in Minnesota, I-35W is the most congestion.

El correcto!

I-84 was once I-80N, and the current I-80 (SF Bay to Salt Lake was I-80S). I'm sure there were others around the country, but interesting the only one left is 35E & W.

The USS Badger that connects US-10 in Ludington, MI with US-10 in Manitowoc, WI. It is also the only remaining passenger ship on the Great Lakes that is coal fired. Built in 1952, 410' long, carries 610 passengers, 180 cars, trucks, buses and RV's. Powered by two 3500 HP steam Engines turning 125 RPM.

It also is one I see all year long because I live just a few miles from where they dock in Ludington.

Here is photo of the old Gal coming home to Ludington on the second trip this year

I think there are more than one. In addition to the US 10 ferry Bydand posted about, there's also the Cape May-Lewes Ferry across Delaware Bay, connecting US Route 9 in Delaware with US Route 9 in New Jersey.
