Talked to my wife ... here's what we're both looking for:
1. Accounting jobs (but you knew that)
2. Good schools - we would both like to live the suburban lifestyle, and she will be teaching elementary school
3. Good number of young families
4. Metropolitan area of 700K +
5. RAIL transit (I neglected that fact above) - esp. if the train goes into the suburbs (or there are plans for it)
6. We both love baseball, so MLB or AAA baseball
From the above recommendations, Denver, Dallas, and St. Louis seem like fits. If we forgo the transit part, Des Moines, Indy, C-bus, and Omaha also fit in the equation. I would have questions about finding work, but that's for another forum.
A couple more bits about Dallas:
* I knew lots of accountants while I lived in Dallas. KPMG used to have a big presence there and may still, and lots of other firms. Plus plenty of accounting positions in corporate offices.
* The Rangers play in Arlington which is not on light rail lines. I think bus options exist, but you pretty much have to drive from Dallas. However, you can get to the Victory area (Mavs/Stars) via light rail. There is also a AAA team in Frisco but I don't know rail accessibility (probably not much).
* Dallas has pockets of very young families. A good fit there. North suburbs (in general) have the best schools.
* The suburban parts that sound like the best fit for you are not particularly well-served by DART (the light rail) - however, they are actively expanding the lines running north. Some areas will have access while others won't. I didn't use DART too often when I lived in Dallas, but mainly because my home/work were very easy access with good parking. Even though DART isn't particularly well known and not massively used by the residents, the few times I did use it I thought it did a pretty good job. If you wind up living and working where it makes sense, I think it's more than serviceable. However don't expect to be able to live without a car, especially if you are going to live in a suburb.
* The cost of living will seem high compared to small town midwest. However, relative to other cities its size, Dallas is very reasonable, with good-paying salaries.
