I grew up in the "good old days" and was a kid in a softer more gentle time. One of the things my family always liked to do-- was jump in the car and go on a Sunday Drive. In some cases, we would just drive to a new Shopping Center across town to look around. Or in other cases, we would look around new neighborhoods. Or in other cases, we would drive to the another small town and then walk around the downtown area and watch the people. For no particular reason but to be together and see something new.
I wonder if anyone does anything like that anymore. I talk to people here in Northern VA who have never been to the next town or suburban area. They only go places where they have a purpose to go to. It may be the shopping center or grocery store that they always shop, or to a particular neighborhood a friend or relative lives in. I talk to people all the time who have never been to Maryland, even though it is only a few miles from my house.
What happened to the Sunday Drive with the family, did it die with the good old days?
I do! I often just get out to check out the state and what it has to offer. Theres nothing better than getting lost with a full tank of gas. And to tell you the truth, Im glad Im so adventurous! Ive found things here in IL that none of my family/friends even knew existed. Ive uncovered some wonderful small towns and large cities, prairies and hills, streams and lakes, local parks and state parks, petting zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. Nothing beats jumping in the car and having a destination:unknown.

Nah Sunday drives are cool. I always go and do that nice relaxing way to get out and get some fresh air. It didn't die its just not a lifestyle choice many families make. Growing up my family did stuff like this and we certainly went to many parks and other activities.

The only Sunday Drive people here do is to church.
But, for the record, most people explore other towns and suburbs typically on Saturday. Besides, more stuff is open on Saturdays than Sundays so I think the new 'drive day' is Saturday.
We go often, but it is more of a Saturday thing than a Sunday thing due to the distance that we oftentimes go while exploring. Due to this regular "outing", we have seen most of FL with the exception of the Panhandle. We really enjoy our day trips.
I usually work 20 hours per weekend at Lowe's, so my "Sunday Drives" are normally "Monday Drives." I like to grab my trusty digital camera and head on out to same random small town in our area that I've never experienced before so I can park my car and wander around every square inch of it, snapping photos of intriguing architecture and stopping in at the local diners for some lunch. It feels so great to escape the sterility of suburbia (at least for a brief time) to take in all of the wonderful sites that PA has to offer! I've already posted about a dozen photo tours on this forum, and at least two per week will be coming now that the weather is pleasant and college finals are winding down.
I also like to take an occasional ten-minute drive up to Glenmaura, a massive planned country club community near me with seven-figure homes, just to gawk at how the "other half" lives and to see how many homes have been built since I last visited. I'll probably do a Glenmaura photo tour as well in a couple of weeks and incorporate the rest of Montage Mountain into that---my Monday photo tours mean most of the residents will be downtown at work anyways and won't even notice me snapping their homes!
The best thing about Scranton is that you can go from being in the "hub" of nightlife, coffee houses, offices, etc. into a rural wonderland in just ten minutes. Beat that, New Jersey! LOL!
I don't often take Sunday drives, but I do take side trips on the way from one place to the next, or I travel a different route, and I still make time for "field trips" which usually entails going to a certain destination to see something new.
But on the whole, I restrict my daily driving to only the most necessary places. City driving drinks more gas.
I love going for "drives to nowhere", even here in the city... just the other day (Saturday) I actually got a bit lost, but ended up driving through some cool parts of town & having a nice time. When I lived in Oregon, I'd hop in my car and head east - out to the Blue River area, which is absolutely gorgeous. I might not have a family yet, but I still enjoy a nice drive once in a while!

For Pete's sake, Rawlings, you know that's not true! Lots of people go skiing, mini-golfing, to the malls, etc on Sundays in Colorado. Back in the day when "Sunday drives" were quite popular (I, too, am old enough to remember this) you did it after church. You make Colorado sound like a theocracy. It's not!
