I would like to get your opinions as to what you consider to be some of the prettiest, most charming, & historically preserved cities or towns in the Blue Ridge & Smoky Mountain areas?
Not charming - untraditional, traffic congested and full of transplants from the northeast and the northeast via Florida. Not exactly known for being historically preserved, either, except for Biltmore.

Asheville is well-known for historic preservation...it's just your opinion on the other stuff, but it's a fact that Asheville has the second largest stock of art deco buildings in the South (#1 is Miami Beach). The city is all about preservation.
Jonesborough, Tenn.
You've got to remember that this area had/has small - tiny - towns. Among the very poorest in the U.S. The architecture was and still is whatever they could afford, be it a shack or a trailer.
Staunton VA is very cute. Charlottesville is nearby and while technically it's not in the blue ridge it's close by and very well preserved and charming.
Cumberland Gap TN is very nice, although not technically in the smokeys. The town is beautifull at the foot of a mountain, and there is a national historic park there.
