Southerners don't brag about toughness in handling heat. Certainly not to the same degree nor the same level of exaggeration that northerners do.

For instance, in some places where it might snow on the odd occassion if schools close for a couple of inches of snow a northerner will respond with "we can have 2 feet of snow and schools would still be open" or if a southerner complains about feeling cold at 30 degrees the northerner response will be "this is nothing." The boasting goes to the point of exaggerating.

BUT....

When a northerner complains about excessive heat at 83 degrees, southerners don't boast about not turning on the air conditioning at 105 degrees or bragging about how much heat they can tolerate.

Why is it such a one way street?

It's not so much bragging as it is a rebuttal to all the Southerners negativity towards cold weather.

Jeez. Try 4 mouths 90-100+ degrees with very high humidity. That's you average Houston and southern Louisiana summer.

I read the first sentence and thought "how ignorant!"

Northerners don't brag about handling the cold it's actually not common to see people love the cold, hence so many north --> south transplants.
It's just that northerners don't get so hyped about a cold day like southners do, and I guess they confuse it with "bragging" by the look of it.

I've never heard a Northerner boast about "Cold Toughness" (why do so many move down South) or get hot at 83° (it gets way hotter than that up North).

I think people exaggerate about how much cold they can take and how heat they can take.

Do you think that it might be possible that many people that live in the south don't like cold weather?
You think that could possibly be a reason they are negative about it?

And why is there a need to rebut what someone else prefers? It kind of takes away from each of us having a personal preference doesn't it?

Sometimes it just comes across as bragging...even if that wasn't the intent.

If someone from Detroit were to move to Atlanta and they got 2 inches of snow and schools were to close, it wouldn't surprise me if they told stories about going to school in 2 feet of snow back home.

My only point was that I don't see people boasting about how much heat they can handle but people to boast about how much cold they can handle. Certainly not to the same degree.
