I've not only heard of all those places, I typically call that area by 3 of the 4 names listed - Hampton Roads, Tidewater, or Norfolk (the last being the central city in the metro area and the city around which the metro area revolves).
aha It seems like nobody gives Virginia Beach any credit for being a city! I mean yeah, Norfolk is the central city, but in like... 5-7 years I think that will be Virginia Beach.
You all should probably stick with Norfolk. I have never heard the old Jewish joke about Sy on the train with his wife Ginny on the train through Hampton Roads.

I actually only refer to the area as Hampton Roads to other locals because I don't think anyone else would know what the heck I'm talking about. I prefer to go by the classic term of the Norfolk metro area because it is the central, most dense, and historically largest city in the area. Recently I add Va Beach to it because it is the largest in population, but it really is just a county that bacame a city, as did Chesapeake and Suffolk, so really it's just a suburb to me. I know they are trying to make it into a real city with the town center area, but it's going to be a long time. I like narrow cobblestone, or former cobblestone streets and alleys. And windy streets that reflect how old a city is, like lower Manhattan, or Boston. Norfolk has it, the Beach doesn't. Though Norfolk demolished most of it's downtown with amazing historic architectural relevance in the 50's-70's, it is building up it's downtown and is still dense. Go light rail!!!
Hampton Roads and Tidewater are the most democratic monikers for the aforementioned metro area.
