Nice List... but you are missing a few notables, Reno, King's Canyon, Calistoga Petrified Forest (although in Napa)
I would also list a bunch of beer breweries...
I've kind of lost my travel bug since moving here because I can drive somewhere in a few hours and be in some insanely crazy new terrain. Bay Area, New England and Seattle Area I think are the best for these.

Can't forget places like Toronto, the 1000 Islands Region of Northern NY and nearby Sackets Harbor, Watkins Glen(in Finger Lakes Region), Niagara Falls, many amusement parks, the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota NY, Turning Stone Casino and Resort and much much more......
From where I used to live in Niagara region it was 15 minutes to the falls and my wife and I used to go there for a mini vacation every Feb. It was under an hour to Buffalo and a lot of people will laugh but I really like Buffalo. It's got great old buildings, interesting parks, a fab.zoo and a very important history in the USA. We used to also go to Pittsburg which was about a6 hr. drive. I love Pittsburg. Toronto was 1 hr. The finger lakes in NY were 3 hrs. The near north in Ontario was 2 to 3 hrs. It's beautiful but I don't like biting bugs so I like going there early in the year before the bugs.

Yes, many places I left out. Not because they werent notable, but because this is what came off the top of my head.

Yeah, some places are just too easy to get away from without going that far.

Chicago
Everywhere else within 2-3 hours (Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville) has nothing more to offer than Indy other than amusement parks.
Ha for me the possibilites are endless. In the Northeast everything is well within 5 hours. Let's see for me you have the beaches from Va. Beach (it may be more than 5 hours though, don't remember) to the Hamptons in New York. Skiing and other "moutain activities" in West Virginia, W. MD, Pennsylvania, and the Virginia Shenandoah.
Plus, most of Virginia, all of Maryland, all of New Jersey, most of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York City, and parts of Connecticut.
I can get to Norfolk in 4-5 minutes. Williamsburg in 35-40 minutes. Richmond in 90 minutes. DC in 2 1/2 hours. Baltimore in 3 1/2 hours. Raleigh in 4 hours. Philly in 5 1/2 hours. Charlotte in 6 hours.
