The reason southerners don't put sugar in the cornbread is cause they used it all making tea.

I lived in Texas for 3 years and I like mine sweet My mother made the drier, crumblier, non-sweet kind, and I didn't like it nearly as well.

Never ate grits when I lived there. The only time I've eaten grits has been in New Orleans when it's loaded with shrimp and a cheese sauce.

I love cornbread when it's not sweet. But with sugar, it's not appealing to me at all. And I wasn't even aware anyone put sugar in grits. That sounds disgusting to me.

I used to like sugar in my grits when I was a child, but as I got old I grew out of it. The only way I will eat cornbread is if it has just the right amount of sugar in it. Grew up on it that way and nearly everyone I know makes it that way. The only time it really sugar really didn't go in cornbread was when it was being made into dressing, which I'm sure is because ground beef, shrimp, oysters, turkey, chicken or whatever meat you use doesn't mix well with slightly sweet cornbread.

This is coming from someone born and raised in the south.

This was similar to my experience as well. Despite being made fun of by my family when I was little, I would sweeten those grits up.

Now that I'm getting to be an old man I generally eat them just with the butter cooked in or I'll salt/pepper 'em every once in a while. I can still eat 'em sweet though. I just like grits with a big ol' side of breakfast ham and some eggs sunnyside up to boot!

When I have time, I completely load my grits with the works. I'll throw some cheese in there (American or cheddar), salt, pepper, an egg, gravy, and some sausage. On the side I'll have some pancakes with syrup, plain waffles, or some buttered toast with my grandma's homemade jam.

Yes lawd......

The only way that I can eat them now is with cheese or some type of meat and sauce/gravy.
