Hey every one I want to make a list of states population without there cities and/or metro areas, I'll start and feel free to join in. {also put down how much land area is left on your state}
New York= 19.5 million
minus rockland county, westchester county, nyc and long island
pop= roughly 7.3 million
then minus erie county, monroe county, albany county and schenectady county
pop= roughly 5 million
and after all that it only takes a sliver of our states land area which starts out as 47,000+ sq.miles and after the deductions roughly 42,000 sq.miles remain with most of our population gone.

Are we also deducting micropolitan areas? Are we deducting ALL metropolitan areas or just the major ones, as it seems thus far you've all only subtracted major ones.

it's your choice, also put in your land area of your state before and after deductions.
I also did some deductions for pa, just take off the pennsylvania highlands region{southeast pa} and philadelphia county = roughly 5.5 million
from 12.6 million.

NY's population would be very very low without the metros, but not quite zero. In New Jersey it would literally be ZERO. Every county in the state is in a metro.
Look at the map of MSAs. Subtract the dark green counties' populations from your state total. That's the exercise. Have fun.

Many parts of northern new york, catskill area and southern tier area are not part of a metro area,
granted many parts of our state are in metro areas and most of them i dont know why, but if you look at the upstate metro areas there not populated like new jersey metro areas you'll find out that there very rural and sparse not too far outside of the cities{buffalo,rochester,syracuse and albany}
btw just mean major metro areas ex.{nyc} not smaller ones ex.{upstate metros}
plus all the upstate metro areas don't even make up half the population of down state which is rockland county, westchester county, nyc and long island and take that area off and new york sate has 7.3 mill left and were still 5 times bigger than jersey and they would have more people.

I heard once that Pennylsvania actually has the largest rural population in the country. I wonder if that's true? And if so, I wonder what is considered rural by the ones doing the counting?
