I'm in the middle of leaving home and moving out on my own, so I wanted to know if anyone had any interesting stories about moving out? How much did it cost? Where did you move to? What age did you leave? Was it easy or hard? What would be some things you would change? What did you learn about the process?
I was still 17 when I went to college, 1,000 miles away. My first summer I spent living at home, but second summer I worked and lived elsewhere, and haven't been home since except to visit.
Everything seemed pretty easy, I made the usual mistakes and learned from them.
I moved out at 18 for good. Was still in school but never moved back home or accepted financial help from my parents.
It was actually quite easy and enjoyable. I didn't have much but I loved what I had.
18. Left for college then Joined the military at 21. out now and on to my 2nd job. it has been tough, my advice would be to save money at a steady pace when you can and never get discouraged...if you do just keep going!
Moved out at 18 and went to the university in my hometown of Iowa City. Moved to Chicago at 22 and everything went almost strangely fine. Had a blast, no problems, got a great place, great roommates, great friends, great job. I'm extremely appreciative.
My first job during grad school paid me $168 per week, which I somehow lived off of easily for a year here in Chicago. That didn't include rent though of $425 per month. Now I can't even imagine living off $168 per week for ALL expenses!
Moved away when I graduated from High School. Graduated one night then left at 6am the next day. Summer job with the US Forest Service in the wilderness area of Idaho (Clearwater National Forest). Got paid minimum wage but no town nearby to spend money, room and board was provided by US FS (room was a tent, latrine was a tent, food prepared by college dorm cooks from Washington State U. Great experience! Then off to college, parents paid for college other than what I saved in my summer job, which covered 30% of first years college costs (all in not just books tuition but room and board and beer money too). Worked while going to college as a dorm conselour, drove a school bus etc (which coverd another 30% of college cost. Got an academic scholarship which covered 20% of college cost and the same pattern repeated each year there after with summer jobs in oil and gas business while I got my Chem Engr degree.
One of the best times of my life. You arent too young to do it, select a balance between working and school load that works for you. Granted college costs were so small then ($8000 was cost of 4 years to get a degree, all in costs) compared to today. UT is a great university but cant speak to its cost vs other good options in Tx. Others may be able to.
I moved away to college when I was 16. Really I was running away from home but my parents got bragging rights and thus were supportive. $50/month covered dorm room, $50 for food, $50 for incidentals. I lived pretty well as I didn't have a car. This was in 1972.
I went to the other UT.
