I agree, the last time I was there was a year ago in June to pick up 2 gps, everyone there was friendly, nice. We stopped to get an oil change and rotate our truck tires before we headed back home to pgh at the time, the guy did the rotate for free only charged for oil change no labor fee at all. Everyone at the stores were nice and friend.

Everywhere you will see racism.

Plainfield, CT would be a suburb in most of the true, rural areas in the nation. Plainfield can basically be a suburb of Providence and is less than 2 hours from both Boston and NYC.

Actually schools here are quite good. Check the test scores - much higher than the national average.

Boring? Yeah, I'd agree.

We tend to place so much emphasis on what we want as individuals rather than focusing on the bigger picture. We use more, waste more, and pollute more than any other society. Is it any wonder that areas of our country are blighted and are more "third-world like" than modern cities.
Unless one is wealthy, just about any area in this country is crap. Most apologists for our decrepid and deteriorating way of life will say, "Yeah, but look how bad it is in Mauritania, Haiti, or the Congo, or some other hell hole. Boy, that makes me feel better. My nominees for worst places are too numerous. Any large urban area, i.e., Detroit, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Trenton, Newark, and Baltimore. Let's not forget those wonderful sun belt valhallas, Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, Houston, N.O. So much crap, so little time.
Europe does not have large urban ghettos of African-Americans suffering under the effects of centuries of poverty and racism, and the severe pathologies suffered as such.

Europe does not gain 1 million impoverished new third-world citizens every year who often join native poor in those same festering ghettos. Nevermind the birth rate from said inhabiatants.

Europe does not border a drug smuggling country where millions of kilos of hard drugs smuggle across, only to be sold on the streets and add to the violence that mars poor communites.

Europe does not have the rampant access to firearms, and idiots like the NRA who block even the most reasonable of background checks.

Europe does not have the land mass and infastucture to maintain. Also, most of "Europe" was turned into a smoldering crater by Mr Hitler, and as a result, America basically built Western Europe for them, so their stuff is newer.

Europe is realitvley lingustically and racially homogenous. And despite what the PC/Diversity Nazis say, not only does this breed kinder communites, but in fact, there is less racism against the minorites than would be there.

That's only a start

Oh, and someone seems to forget Europe's communist block style housing projects where they stuff their working class and "ethnics". Guess someone has never seen the Soviet Bloc.

Default Has to be Reno, NV

Although Los Angeles is probably the all-time worst place on earth, I'd say Reno, NV is the very next worst place I've ever lived. Drunken, gambling cowboys, meth addicts, proud illegals and white trash, no laws to protect animals (one of my dogs was killed by a loose Rottweiller and the other was almost killed by two loose Akitas), potholed roads, corrupt casino atmosphere, bored police force, ineffective court system, mediocre university, dangerous wildfires, and wild west mentality. The good things are the cheap casino shows and the usually nice weather.

I lived in richmond for 19 years. it has a *history* of racism, that's undeniable. it also is stuck in its confederate past, and it needs to move on.

however, it is a genuinely good city, friendly, laid back and mostly green. full of great architecture and good food. some of the best restaurants in the southeast easily.

i live in baltimore now, and baltimore is a stuffed, used diaper in comparison to richmond. it's amazing you can go north and find a place as backwards assed, crime ridden, decaying and segregated as baltimore.

the only thing baltimore has going for it is crabs, and even they are imported from asia now since the chesapeake has been polluted and over-harvested.

there's a huge lack of culture in baltimore IMO. the inner harbor is ill-advised (why go there- it's just a surburban wannabe strip mall in a downtown area) a hard rock cafe and a over sized espn sports bar does not make a city!

there are square miles of baltimore that would be better off dynamited and the remains ground up into dust. They should build a huge park, plant some trees and give some oxygen back to the post industrial grey, drab brutality.

Oh- I forgot, they already have quite a few parks that they neglect. nevermind.
