Definitely not Portland. The stench of cigarettes and pot fills the air here. A huge amount of smokers here. It comes with the territory, alot of down and outs populate this city in droves. Also its in a valley and pollutants become trapped here. I remember visiting Boulder, Co and thinking the air was so clear. When I would breathe the clean crisp air was so refreshing. Boulder is not a major city but the air is definitely clean.

In 2005 the American Lung Association listed cities on various pollution standards. Bellingham, Colorado Springs, Deltona-Daytona Beach, Farmington in New Mexico, and Honolulu seem to be on all three of their "clean" lists. Cheyennne, Wyoming was listed as the cleanest for "long-term particulates." Tucson is maybe the cleanest of larger cities going by them.

Something called "Green Daily" placed Honolulu as the least polluted, but this may not specify air pollution.

There are quite a number of choices, and choosing a common denominator between the American Lung Association list and the list comparing long/short term particulates might be a good way to go about it. Most people think of carbon emissions and industrial waste, but one does need to factor in places where there are a lot less smokers....it does make a difference.
