Here in Texas, Austin's metal scene is nothing to brag about considering it's the "music capital of the world." As far as I know, we have two music venues that regularly play metal: Red Eyed Fly and Emo's. San Antonio and Dallas's metal scenes are far superior. Even my hometown of McAllen has a better metal scene than does Austin. I've heard good things about Buffalo's.
Those are some of the worst bands to come out in recent years. Trendy scenster garbage played by a bunch of people who are more concerned about image than the music.
Though I think the comment "Old man metal" wasn't needed neither was the stereotype "Trendy scenster garbage played by a bunch of people who are more concerned about image than the music." The guy has a valid point, Columbus/Dayton area Ohio has a pretty big Metalcore/Electronic Metalcore scene.
I've scene TDWP live and they have improved substantially with live performances since they began and are coming out with a more hard, refined metal sound than they have in years past, Attack Attack! has had far to many line-up and style changes to make a generalized judgement, Miss May I and The Crimson Armada are hardly "Trendy" in looks, lyrics, or sound but I haven't heard anything from My Ticket Home or Death of an Era so on that principal alone you can have those two "Trendy scenesters".
However, as for Indianapolis/Indiana. Lately we've had a fairly quiet (but ever-growing) metal scene, right now we mostly have a lot pop-punk and pop-rock bands but in the past we have produced big bands like Haste The Day and Gwen Stacy and we currently have a very promising group by the name of Forevermore which is currently number one on Bandcamp and un-signed no less.

well I was going to ask as well...what the best metal scene is because I live in Tampa,FL....and I was thinking about opening up my own metal band promoting business and I was all like Tampa is not a good place to do it...but I can see it has potentital just like anywhere else in the U.S. thank you guys

Albuquerque has a surprisingly good Metal scene. The local bands really go all out too, and there sure are a lot of practice studios around town. Most bars and clubs Downtown and in Nob Hill have local Metal. Because we're the only major city for a few hundred miles around, most big-name bands also stop on tour here (Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Slayer, Gigantour to name a few).

Bumping this because I'm looking to relocate somewhere in the sunbelt(-ish) and am looking for some heavy music co-conspirators on the more modern end of things (i.e. what's going on now, not "back in the day").
The only thing I can contribute is while I've come across a few good bands here (Oxford Coma, Talk To Sheep, Animus Complex), Phoenix sucks pretty hard so far a scene goes and finding motivated and original musicians here is pretty much an impossibility.

By the way, eastern Pennsylvania seems to have emerged as a metal hotspot in recent years. Bands like August Burns Red (Manheim), CKY (West Chester), Motionless In White (Scranton), Texas In July (Ephrata) and This Or The Apocalypse (Lancaster) have impacted in recent years. And that's not an exhaustive list either. There are several recently-successful mainstream metal bands from eastern Pennsylvania too, such as Breaking Benjamin (Wilkes-Barre), Halestorm (Red Lion), Candlelight Red (Williamsport) and From Ashes To New (Lancaster), as well as heavier alternative rock bands like Live (York) and Fuel (Harrisburg).

Yeah, the other guitar player from my last band when I was in Portland was from Gallup, which is hardly a blip on a map, but the venues there pull some big names through and fill up because the area supports the music. Metal town for sure.
It's nuts because you'll see (more-and-more these days) tours skip right over Phoenix and then have dates in places like Tuscon and Gallup. The attendance at the shows I've gone to are pathetic as hell here too. I can't wait to get out.
