I prefer the big city, though I currently live in the suburbs. I wouldn't mind living in a small town or city depending on what you mean by small town and population is important to me. If its a city in the middle of nowhere, I prefer it to at least have 50,000 people with some racial diversity.
For example, Champaign, IL //www.city-data.com/city/Champaign-Illinois.html

Small towns is where the heart is, Big Ciites were the dollars are.
Not always. Moved to a small town (population 1250) and made twice what I did the year before in a larger city, plus the COL is way lower in the small town. It all depends on your job.

True and sometimes it could be a thing of one community near a bigger city having a lower cost of living in relation to the rest of that area.
For me it's probably 10,000 or less. I consider anything over 35,000 to be too big for me. My current town has about 27,500 but it's spread out over a lot of land so it doesn't feel crowded.
I've lived in New York (metro of about 19 million) and I've lived in a city of only 3,000 people and numerous cities in between those sizes.
For me, the best size is something over a million, but less than eight million, so I'm a big-city guy, though maybe not a "mega" city guy. I like the energy and opportunities available in cities, but I don't want the city to be so large that I can't get out of it on occasion for a break. New York was awesome to live in for a while, but I would not want to live there forever b/c after time I think it would start being a bit too much.
