Hello. I am from Chicago and want OUT! The weather is absolutely miserable here. We didn't even have a summer in 2009, as far as I'm concerned. Just winter, a short spring/fall, and more winter. The crime is also depressing, among many other things.
I am just going to get up and go one day, hopefully before June. I am 26, female, African American and I'm mostly looking for a city that is warm year-round, has good public transportation, low cost of living, and has many libraries. Would prefer somewhere that is relatively safe and has a decent African American population. I am reasonable though, I am from the southside of Chicago, so I don't need a suburb with a 0% crime rate to feel safe. I do prefer city living vs. suburbs or tiny towns.
I don't have any specialized skills, I am a clerical/library worker with a liberal arts degree, so I am aware that it will be difficult to find a job. So I am looking for someplace that will be "kind" to unskilled workers, if that's even realistic. Someplace that has a lot of offices, universities, law firms, and other buildings that may have libraries.

ATL and Dallas get colder in the winter but nothing compared to Chicago.
I'd say Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill NC. Has plenty of colleges ranging from the big research university in UNC, NC State, a high level private school in Duke and a few HBCU's in Shaw, NC Central and St. Augustine's, among others. That area is growing like crazy right now too.
Greensboro NC is similar in that respect as well.
You might also like parts of Charlotte, Nashville, Birmingham, Richmond and the Norfolk/Tidewater/Hampton Roads area of VA too.
