The 80s and 90s were far from the best decades the country has seen, but they were much better than 2000s and now. 9/11, Muslim extremist terrorism, two long-winded wars, the housing bubble and burst and a crippled world-wide economy - that past ten years has sucked.
What WERE the best decades? 20's, 50's and 80's? Those decades were all, for the most part, "bottomless times of joy".
the 80's no doubt :
- aids was not yet the health hazard it was to become in the 90's
- women's fashion (and even men's ) was much sexier (no tattos, shaved heads and armpits etc)with flowing hair and hazy textile
- the new slavery (Internet addiction, mobile phones, smartphones, and all Apple gadgets) had not yet quite started
- the ugly sound called "rap" was not yet to be heard
- people were still talking directly to each other back then, they didn't need Skype
- we were 1 bn inhabitants less, so more space to breathe
- political correctness while already there had not attained the extremes it has today
- the Soviet Union and China were not a threat anymore, there was a fine balance between powers, few wars : starting 1990 and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the world has become a much more dangerous place
The 90s were the internet (Web) ... not 2000s. The dot com bubble had already crashed in March of 2000 and AOL and Time Warner had already merged. 2000s were just social media and people getting higher speed connections. We had Compuserve, AOL, Windows 95, Windows 98, AngelFire, Priceline, Lycos, GeoCities, Web Crawler, Yahoo, eBay, AOL Instant Messenger, IRC, ICQ, MS Chat, all that good stuff. Of course most of us were on dial-up modems...but that was okay!
Some reasons why the 2000s to now is so much better than the 1980s and 1990s:
1. More technologically advanced.
Example 1:Computers and the internet barely even existed in the 1980s up to early to mid 1990s. It wasn't used by the majority of Americans until the Late 1990s/early 2000s.
Example 2: Cell phones and ipods started to be used much more from the early 2000s and later. Did they even exist before the mid to late 1990s?
Example 3: Some of the best websites in existence such as facebook, city-data and some other great websites were not even created until the early 2000s and later.
Example 4: Airplanes was not nearly as safe to travel in the 1980s and before as it was in the 2000s and later.
2. Better race relations and more racial integration
3. Better gender relations between both genders.
4. More equality for people that deserve equality
5. Better urban amenities of different types
6. Much lower crime rates for most places in the 2000s to now compared to how it was in the 1980s and 1990s.
7. USA had to worry about a nuclear war in the 1980s and the Cold war time period and from the 2000s to now it doesn't like the way it had to worry about it during the Cold War.
8. A higher percentage of people that are middle class and wealthy and less low income/poverty problems compared to how it was in the 1980s and 1990s.
9. The country became more progressive.
10. Much better, more varied and healthier food options.
11. More healthy lifestyle possibilities.
What are you smoking?!?! I'll give you 1 and 6 and maybe 4 at best. Just because the president is half black doesn't mean much. I also think it's interesting and likely expected that people are now starting to look at the 80's and even 90's like people used to talk about the 50's-70's.
I only remember the 90s....I was 3 in 1989 so don't know anything about the 80s. The 90s were AWESOME from what I can remember. Music, games, everything!

Dial up was okay in the way that root canals pre-anesthesia were okay.

Tell that to someone who grew up in Alabama in the 1960's.
People always look back at prior generations with rose-colored glasses. Nothing interesting about that. There are people who'll tell you things were better in 1900 (average lifespan: 47), ffs.
