What do you think of when the term "Midwest Mentality" is used? I find it interesting and I have heard people say that people from the midwest think they know everything and how to do things a certain way and are really not open to alternative views. Where people from the coasts are more open minded? And then I am not sure how the south plays into this. What do you think?

It more has to do with where exactly you're from within a region. I mean you're going to have people who aren't open to new ideas in certain areas of the Midwest, just like you're going to have that in certain areas of the south, east, west, etc.

Midwest Mentality

Hmm, Love your family. Work hard. Treat people with kindness. Be a productive member of society. I would assume their mentality is the same as anywhere else. I have never lived in the midwest, but I think people are just generally people, with the exception of small pockets of extreme.

There are ways of living that differ enough, but I would never generalize a whole group or area from stereotypes.

Basically put. You have productive members of society everywhere, as well as criminals, knuckleheads, and the like. Every place has every type, no exceptions. People are people.

It is a term I have heard used several times and it is used in a negative way. I was just asking if people have heard of the term and their thoughts on the matter...

I'm not sure the term holds much weight. First of all, the mentality of people in say Cleveland are going to differ strongly from cities in Iowa or The Dakotas (not to mention Indiana). I don't even think Ohio and Indiana are similar mentality wise.

Monkeyface911 mentioned the term in the Chicago forum:
//www.city-data.com/forum/chica...l-place-2.html

"I did. Thank the heavens. I'm just trying to warn others who may be considering it because previously, all I heard about living in Chicago was how beautiful it is and how friendly the people are. It's all a facade. Honestly, Chicago is the nexus of the universe. The people are mind-boggling ignorant and their sensibilities and morals are rotten to the core (like the above poster regarding "blacks" and their "awful neighborhoods") All I'm saying is, if you weren't raised with the midwest mentality, you will never understand the midwest mentality. It's more backwards than most parts of the South, yet they for some reason have this heir of superiority that condescends to anyone with alternate beliefs. Chicago is not what it pretends to be. Keep that in mind before making the move."

maybe he/she can weigh in further...

You're asking someone who obviously has an anti-Chicago bias, to affirm the "Midwest Mentality?" As if such a thing exists because Monkeyface911 says it's so? You have stated in previous posts that you're from Missouri, yet you seem like you know nothing of the Midwest? Correct me if I'm wrong, but your thread seems like an attempt to bash the Midwest.

Well this is a term that people have used I thought it would be interesting to see if other people had heard of it - which I have several times. Well the midwest is a region and it is very different compared to the west cost and the east coast. I am from Missouri and there are things I like and also dislike about the midwest. The person from Chicago is one of the few who have mentioned the term, so I thought there was possibly more insight available.
