In Arizona, rain.

Everyone goes outside or stands in their doorway and watches it.

Yeah...when i saw the title of this thread, I thought 9-11 right away. It's sad how disasters are usually the main reason why a city comes together.

Other than that, I'd say our pro sports teams.

especially the first one in the 60s. Major blizzards generally do also. Anytime there is a major crisis, New Yorkers will pull together and help one another; even to the detriment to themsleves.

I met one of my best friends during a hurricane. He was a neighbor, and we would always greet wit the cursory nod, wave or "hello".

After the storm blew out our windows and knocked out power, we just started hanging out, First by doing home repairs together, then BBQing, playing board games and just drinking beers waiting for power to be restored.

And who can really forget the sense of national unity after 9/11?

Snowstorms do too. We moved to our neighborhood recently, and one of the neighbors down the block introduced himself and offered to snow blow our part of the sidewalk and the end of our driveway.
