We are an Asian male/White female couple. We are hoping to move from Boston to a city with more affordable housing (warmer would be nice, too!). One of my top concerns is finding a city where we (and our future mixed-race children) will be accepted/welcomed.
My ideal location would have/be:
friendly people
tolerant/accepting toward interracial couples
housing that is affordable for first-time home buyers
warmer than Boston
reasonable cost of living (cheaper than Boston would be nice!)
we prefer a city over a smaller town
Affordable housing and tolerance are the most important characteristics. Do you have any suggestions for us (or personal experiences to share)? So far we have visited Austin, TX.

Maybe a major college town in the South would fit. Maybe something like Charlottesville or Blacksburg in Virginia.
If weather and city size wasn't a factor, in NY State, Ithaca NY would be perfect. Same with the Binghamton NY area. Especially Johnson City or Vestal. Ithaca, especially has one of the highest percentages of Asians out of US metros and is known for being pretty liberal.
Columbus Ohio is another area that you could check out, as it is growing and is known for being an area more tolerant of IR couples. It is more affordable than Boston too. Perhaps Denver as well.
I would focus more on affordable housing and jobs. I really think that just about every (if not every) larger city would be tolerant of you and your future children. Is there something going on in Boston regarding racism that I'm not aware of?
Hi guys, thank you so much for taking the time to give me some suggestions. I'm absolutely interested in CA but it's true, the expensive housing worries me. We can't afford more than $300k max I'd say. I have no idea if that even buys you a small condo anywhere in CA. We would want a 2 bed 2 bath house at least.
I've only been to CA as a child and don't remember much. But I would like to learn more and hope there might be someplace we could live there. It seems like the highest census stats on interracial couples and Asian populations all point to the West Coast, and to CA especially.
David, no, we haven't had many problems here in Boston. Years ago, my fiance told me about some horrible things some construction workers said to him as he was walking by, but that's the only time I can recall that something bad happened. But it was so horrible that I really don't want to ever have my future husband or kids have to go through it again. Our one big problem with Boston is the pricey housing. And, I want a warmer climate! We've been here for about 7-8 years now and just need a change.
Oklahoma City surprises me! Never been there but my initial assumption would be to think it'd be a less-integrated/tolerant place. I must be wrong... what am I missing?
