Champaign-Urbana has terrible "town/gown" relations, there is virtually nothing there besides the University (though some of the residents will try to tell you otherwise), and I personally got tired of all the students. Plus, the environment is boringly flat, and the climate is awful.
Boulder, CO has more than the university. Politics are a little nuts, but I have heard the same about Madison. (Have virtually NO experience with Madison).
We are having to relocate from MI becuase of the job market and would love to find a college / university town that was alot like East Lansing (MSU). Progressive, diverse and has alot to offer educationally. Any help would be greatly appreciated we're starting to feel like we'll never find the right place for our family.
Your big ten rival...Bloomington, IN. Such a cultured little town, its different than all of Indiana, including Indianapolis.
See the Pittsburgh forum for some commentary about both Madison and Bloomington. Sound like typical college politically-correct towns to me (and I have lived in a few).
I'm a student at the UW in Madison...it is a great college town. There is so much to do. The lake, the Union and Terrace are awesome during the spring and summer, State St., farmer's market, plenty of bars and restaurants for any taste. There are always families and kids out on campus or State St. during the weekend afternoons. There is always a sporting event to attend, many here are very loyal fans of football, basketball, and hockey. A lot of the student body, and many residents in the area are politically active (many of them liberal). There are a lot of events happening here that people other than students can take advantage of. I'd say give Madison a shot and check it out. There are some smaller towns within a few minutes of Madison, like Middleton and Verona that are nice as well.
