You put that on your list just for me to catch.
However, as your question is a good one, I'll focus on it and bash Buckeyes later.
The best Great Lakes shoreline (on the US side) is available in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Illinois' shoreline is alternatively industrial, urban, or private. However, if you live in Chicagoland, you can day trip to Michigan or Wisconsin.
Salty options include Richmond, which is a straight shot up I-64 from Hampton Roads ... Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Virginia Beach, and the like. If you get a job at CapitalOne making silly commercials, it's all good. Raleigh-Durham and Columbia, SC are also viable; you can drive to New Bern and the Outer Banks, as well as Charleston, SC.
The only city near saltwater for which I really care is Seattle.
But, you may want to take a trip to the W. Coast and head up to Portland and Seattle too. They weren't on your list. Seattle is an amazing city. I would move there 2nd only to moving back to LA.
Southern California is wonderful. Excellent weather, good ecducation, rich culture, ethnic diversity and world class variety and entertainment. Beautiful beaches, breathtaking ocean views, no humidity/no cold.
Only drawback....HIGH RENT/HOUSING and SPRAWL..But decent public transit compensates for the sprawl so you'll never be stranded as you would in some cities. Seattle-Wonderful city, one of my favorites but it's very expensive.
Portland sounds nice but it's getting up there cost wise. Also, you need to be able to deal with 9 months of drizzle, cold and wetness from what the locals say.
Texas--that is why I am here! I really like New Mexico as a state, but economically, they are not doing well. Or one of the other less populated places, Montana, Wyoming, Dakotas--but SOOOO cold!!
