For New York, the Hamptons.

For Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Coral Gables.

Is Bellevue really a suburb? It seems more like a large city that just happens to be near Seattle.

For SF the most "notable" suburb has to be Sausalito.

I don't know most cities outside California well enough to even name a suburb. But there are many notable suburbs surrounding California cities:

San Francisco: Burlingame\ San Mateo\ Berkeley\ Oakland\ San Rafael

Los Angeles: Santa Monica\ Beverly Hills\ Pasadena\ Torrance\ Burbank

San Diego: La Jolla\ Rancho Santa Fe\ El Cajon\ La Mesa

People, you really need to know what constitutues a suburb. I know, but a lot of you don't. Suburbs aren't just cities that happen to be located near a big City.

In other words, it's ridiculous to call Bellevue, Oakland, Fort Worth, St. Paul, Ft. Lauderdale, and Jersey City suburbs. They aren't suburbs.

Urban Sprawl: Causes, Consequences & Policy Responses by Gregory D. Squires
How Cities Work: Suburbs, Sprawl, and The Roads Not Taken by Alex Marshall

^ Those are both pretty good books, both really easy to read. Read them, and you'll have a better understanding of what a Suburb is.
