wow, i am surprised no one has mentione Research Triangle Park or RTP in NC. it's between Raliegh and Durham. international airport minutes away. people commute from as far as Johnston and Alamance counties from either direction. 3 Major Universities of UNC, NC state, and DUke all minutes away, and plenty of other universities in the state.
weather is beautiful and it's right in the middle of the state. 3 hours from the beach and about 4 from the mountains.
homes range from million dollar to less than 100k depending on how far you want to live.
Orlando is also a major technology hub mainly I'm the north and east suburbs. A lot of friendly areas to live in as well. Hell, it's only 30 mins away from the happiest place on earth. only 45 mins away from the beaches/NASA. 4 hours from south beach, 1.5 hours from the warm calm gulf coast beaches, plenty to do within the metro, etc.
Before I viewed the list at the link, Columbus, Pittsburgh and Madison came to mind. Lots of university talent and humility to be found in any of those cities. Then I discovered that the first two were in the article.
Denver has alot of technology related companies due to the high altitude making a 'one-bounce' real-time satellite uplink to six continents in the same business day posible. Qwest is hedquartered here, and DISH network, Comcast, Starz all have operations in Denver.
Northern Virginia also has alot of tech related companies, additionally most of them do contract work with the Fed. Gov't. Some of them include AOL, Cisco, BAE, DynCorp, L-3 Communications, etc.

The Triangle flies under the radar in the General and City vs. City forums. On the other hand, it's the most active metro forum in all of City-Data. Raleigh/Cary (the eastern side of the Triangle) is the fastest growing MSA in the nation and its future is really, really bright. Of course, technology and biotechnoloty are two of the big reasons why that's so.
As for housing costs, the average 3 bedroom house will run you from the Low200's to the low 300's depending on a variety of typical locations, overall footage, age and finish quality. Some very specific areas might be more and some might be less.
The Triangle's citizens are friendly, highly educated and more progressive than the typical Southern metro. As you mentioned, the education credentials of the area are outstanding. It's not listed in the up and coming list because it's already quite established.
