If you love music/art, Lollapalooza in Chicago and Bonnaroo in Tennessee are two of the best music festivals in the country (along with South by Southwest in Austin and Coachella in California, although those have both already passed).

Halloween in Austin or Madison, WI
Mardi Gras in New Orleans
New Years- NYC
Comic Convention- San Deigo
Hell, everyday is a party in Vegas.
I see your South Asian and have lived in Chicago too.
Forget the Taste of Chicago and come for Lollapalooza instead
Forget both IMO. Lollapalooza. That's about as fresh as 4 days of the same pair of underpants. It supposed to be a "alternative" festival, not a pop alternative mall-hippie love fest.
Taste of Chicago is hit and miss you are right ..and overpriced.
There are other alternative festivals, although smaller, that are much better and much more fun in Chicago. Lolla basically attracts your average run of the mill moron...sorry but true.

Lollapalooza is not one of the "best" in the country. Has not been for over a decade.
