Does Los Angeles have an "upstate" like NYC has The Catskills? (camp, live)

I'm moving from the Bronx to Los Angeles this summer. I've lived in NY my entire life and one of the things I truly cherish is going up to the Catskills every summer. Does LA have anything remotely like this? People from NY know what I mean. There is just something special about the Catskill area. That timeless summer camp vibe that just lingers up there. So I guess what I'm really asking is does Los Angeles have a slow rural vacation area that's about 2-3 hours away from the city? This is probably my one and only concern, ha! Thanks!

Well I do not know.. but nothing compares to NY. But yeah it is best if you asked this question in the LA forums.
Well, Upstate New York and the Catskills are two different things. All of the Catskills are in Upstate New York, but not all of Upstate New York is the Catskills. Are you looking for one over the over?
If you're just looking for an equivilent of Upstate New York I would say either anywhere in Northern California or the East of the Bay Area and the Southern California Metros (the mountains and deserts).
I have lived in neither LA or NY so I am not an authority on the matter, but I think this is a legitimate question. Although LA has mountains and beaches nearby, many of which are protected as natural parks, I don't think these areas are nessecarily similiar to the Catskills. NPs clearly cannot be developed to the level of the Catskills, and it seems like other areas may be too developed. Maybe up towards Sequoia NP?
I have lived in both LA and NY. There is nothing within two hours of LA that can compare to the Catskills.
LA has mountains which are much taller, and their own unique majesty, but the catskills are verdant with many waterfalls and creeks along the fall line.
There is also a quasi Hippie/hillbilly culture in the Catskills which LA probably hasn't seen since the mid 70's.
