Many people flee these areas, so I guess this wealth is in the hands of a small minority.
Boston's city proper poulation has increased by at least 50,000 since the last census-if not more.
It's CSA has increased by about another 400,000 since that last census. Still the 5th largest in the nation.
Okay, so it's not by a million people...but really. please tell us whose fleeing the northeast.
when I hear the term "fleeing the state" I get this visual of throngs of people, half naked running down the highway screaming bloody murder with fistfuls of cash towards the border with a gigantic Uncle Sam chasing them.
Illinois and California are in the red. Is GDP helping with that?
Actually GDP has nothing really to do with the state budget problems. One of the only times Financial Analysts really look at GDP in the context of govt debt is when they determine how large the total debt is compared to the total GDP.
No US State, not even California with its much heralded budget woes is anywhere near as bad as several European Nations.
Greece, Italy and Spain all have total outstanding bonds that are over 100% of their national GDP. France, Germany, the UK all are over 50%.
That is scary.
By Contrast, California's outstanding bonds are not even 10% of the state GDP.
I find these numbers incredibly hard to believe, especially for California.
