Can one of you kind folks tell me if there is a big difference between the quality of education at these schools, in particular Athens Academy vs. the Oconee Cty public high schools?

Default Athens Academy vs Oconee

The price is one big difference!! LOL
I have kids in Oconee at all levels and have been very happy here.
North Oconee HS is ranked 15th in the state
Oconee HS is ranked 23rd.
I believe the Oconee county system is still ranked 2nd.
Oconee schools are one of about 3-4 counties in the state that have had all schools make AYP for the last 5 years in a row.

On the other side, I have friends whose children go to Athens Academy and they are very happy there. Lots of opportunities and extra curriculars for a private school. I don't know how they measure up to the others like Prince Avenue.

I haven't heard complaints about either school. Personally, I can't justif the expensive of private school when we have one of the best public systems in the state right here. Of course, private school tuition for three kids would warrant some sort of lottery winnings.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Depends on your insights of private vs public, your individual child and your bank account.

Best of Luck!

Default Athens Academy

the previous poster is correct---MONEY! however, i believe Athens Academy does have some scholarships. how those work i have no idea. the wealthiest people generally send their children there; i have heard no complaints. they seem to be able to afford top faculty with advanced/serious degrees. it is a first rate institution from all appearances. perhaps one of the biggest advantages of a child going there is making social connections. like it or not, that still counts in our society.
