Hi all,

I was curious about cultural activities in Athens. How would you rate Athens in the following categories?

Live music in general

I know that UGA must pull some good cultural activities into Athens (as UTK does here in Knoxville). Knoxville has an Opera Company, a Symphony Orchestra, and several theatre companies (the biggest being UT's). There is also a Shakespeare on the Square festival every year. Are there similar things in Athens? I would actually wager that they're better than here (with maybe the exception of the opera; Knoxville's company ranks pretty high in that).

I can only comment on Live Music in general. I lived in Athens for about 5 or 6 years and the bands that place attracts and churns out are unreal. I remember seeing Dave Matthews in fraternity basements up there in 1990-1991 or at the Georgia Theater before anyone knew who he was.

40 Watt also has some really great bands. I saw Angie Aparo at Tasty World a few years back and I've seen so many good bands at the Georgia Theater it would be hard to remember them all.

Athens has great cutural activities. The Classic Center (broken link)has a Broadway play series that is excellent and many other shows and concerts, there are music festivals that are annual productions including recent AthFest, we have an ok symphony that does several concerts a year and then all of the stuff at UGA. You can find something to do almost every day is you really want too!
